A rare item. A Victorian mechanical folding biscuit box with 3 segments. The gilded interior of each section has pretty pierced covers on spring retainers which can be opened. Silver plated all over. Deep engraved scroll decoration and a harebell flower border. Height 24 cms. Width 21 cms. Circa 1880. Marked underneath with silver plate stamps for maker G & L.

Literature: Traditionally these boxes were kept by the fire to warm the biscuits. They usually have pretty pierced grills to keep the biscuits in place which can be lifted to access the contents.
