A very charming piece of early Scottish silver. A rare antique sterling silver taper stick in the form of Harlequin holding up the candle sconce. Cast silver. Excellent quality. Lovely patina. Around the top there is a hand engraved motto 'CURA QUIETEM'. Weight 177 grams, 5.6 troy ounces. Height 14 cms. Diameter of base 6.5 cms. Edinburgh 1759. Maker James Weems.

This candlestick was produced over a period of about ten years, mainly by William Cafe.

Literature: Harlequin is the most well known of the zanni or comic servant characters from the Italian Commedia dell'arte. Characterized by his chequered costume, his role developed over the years from a wily, covetous, comic servant into a prototype of the romantic hero.
