An elegant antique sterling silver tray of oval form and raised on splay feet. Classical plain style with a reed border and band of hand engraved decoration with bright cut edging. Weight 2123 grams, 68.2 troy ounces. Spread across handles 59 cms. Length 51 cms. Width 38.5 cms. London 1792. Maker John Hutson. Trays aren't found dated earlier than circa 1785 so this is one of the earliest trays ever made.
Literature: The first trays were oval shaped and did not appear until the late 18th century. The rectangular form was not generally seen until the early 1800's. Some early salvers were originally called trays, this word is now used when there are two handles.
