A magnificent antique sterling silver box with doubled compartment and hinged lid. Excellent size and weight. Original gilt interior. Crisp cast borders and engine turned decoration to the sides and base. The top bears a regimental inscription. Weight 542 grams, 17.4 troy ounces. Height 4cm. Top 12 x 8.5cm. London 1822. Maker John Reily.

Literature: Grinding tobacco leaves in order to inhale the powder dates from the mid 17th century in Europe however the first snuff boxes don't seem to have appeared until the reign of William III circa 1695.
