An early 19th century silver toothpick holder in the form of a bird cage with a classical domed lid pierced to hold the toothpicks. Will make a fantastic show when the toothpicks are inserted on the top. Weight 341 grams, 11 troy ounces. Height 16.5 cms. Base diameter 11 cms. Marked underneath with an assay scrape and Portuguese silver marks for Porto 1843 – 1853. Makers initials AM.

Literature: Ornamental toothpick holders quickly became popular at the beginning of 19th century when disposable wooden toothpicks were introduced. The fashion spread across Continental Europe to display the toothpick holders on the table. Usually they had a pierced base or a small container where sunburst toothpicks ornamentations were inserted and many attractive models are found with figures and/or animals.
