A fine quality antique sterling silver tray of oval form with side carrying handles. Classical style with bead borders and fine bands of bright cut engraving around the edge. The centre has an pretty hand engraved cartouche containing a stag crest. Weight 2032 grams, 65.3 troy ounces. Spread across handles 58 cms. Length 51 cms. Width 38 cms. London 1796. Maker George Burrows.

Literature: The first trays were oval shaped and did not appear until the late 18th century. The rectangular form was not generally seen until the early 1800's. Some early salvers were originally called trays, this word is now used when there are two handles.
