Phillip Roker

Phillip Roker I, London silversmith, apprenticed to Edward Gladwyn 1676, freedom unrecorded. Mark entered as largeworker undated, probably 1697.

Phillip Roker II, son of Phillip I, apprenticed to Joseph Barbutt (specialist spoonmaker) 1707, free 1720. 1st mark entered as largeworker 1720. 2nd (sterling) mark 1720, 3rd 1739. His eldest son John was apprenticed to him in 1737, his next son Phillip III to his brother in 1743, the 3rd son Mathew was freed by patrimony 1754 (1st mark entered 1755), 4th son William was apprenticed to Henry Bickerton 1757, probably the year of Phillip II’s death.

Phillip Roker III, apprenticed to his brother John 1743, freedom unrecorded. Mark entered as spoonmaker in 1776. There is a long gap between Phillip III’s apprenticeship and the 1776 mark entry and it seems probable that Phillip III worked at his brother John’s premises until John’s death c.1758 and Phillip III’s first mark was registered in the missing 1758 register.
