An excellent quality antique silver box in the form of a recumbent lion, the famous Lion of Lucerne. The box opens from underneath with a sliding cover and has the inscription “HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI” (To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss). Weight 204 grams, 6.5 troy ounces. Measures 10 x 4.25 cms, height 5.25 cms. Marked on the cover with continental silver marks “K” and a shield with an arm holding an arrow. Continental. Circa 1880.

This is a superb solid silver galleon ship, known as a Nef, with 3 tall masts having multi section sails, manned crows nests, flags and rigging. Many parts of the ship are gilded. Each mast has a man climbing up a tall ladder. The captain is standing on the deck behind the rear mast. Around the edge of the deck there is a gallery with port holes. The top section of the Neff can be removed from the hull and is held in position by 2 small clips. The hull of the ship is finely embossed with cherubs and scrolls and the interior is gilded. The ship has 8 cannons and stands on four decorative wheels. Weight 1187 grams, 38.1 troy ounces. Height 38.5 cms. Spread 34.5 cms. Top of the hull measures 27.5 x 12 cms. The rudder is stamped with Spanish silver marks, the assay town and pentagram quality mark. The silver grade is “915”. Circa 1930.

A rare early English sterling silver chalice dating to the reign of James I. Over 400 years old and in very good condition. Plain form with a flared top and shaped pedestal foot. The outside of the bowl has a broad hand engraved design with scrolls and leaves. The pedestal foot is engraved with the much used “hit and miss” decoration which consists of parallel lines of spaced dashes. Uninscribed. Excellent colour. Charming hand beaten finish as you’d expect from this period. Contains 300 ml. Weight 198 grams, 6.3 troy ounces. Height 17.5 cms. Diameter – top 7.25 cms, foot 8 cms. A handsome antique sterling silver soup tureen in the Adam style. Classic boat shape with gadroon borders, half fluting and an imposing crown finial. To both sides there is a fine hand engraved armorial topped by a large crown (same as the lid finial). To the lid there is a hand engraved double lion crest, also topped by the family crown. The motto "Fama Semper Vivet" means "May His Fame last Forever". Weight 2680 grams, 86 troy ounces. Height 26 cms. Spread across the handles 44 cms. Width 33.5 cms. Depth 21 cms. London 1791. Maker James Young whose work is described by Grimwade as being of elegant neoclassical design and fine finish.

Stamped “STERLING” on the top of the back stand. The style and silver mark indicate that the frame is of either German or American origin, circa 1920.

An excellent quality pair of antique silver model birds, we think these are woodcocks, with excellent weight and extremely fine detail. They are magnificently hand chased from beak to tail tip. The woodcock are shown with the male bird standing, surveying his surroundings with his beak slightly open. The female is bending down pecking for food. Total weight 1095 grams, 31.1 troy ounces. Male – weight 563 grams, 18.1 troy ounces, height 16.25 cms, spread 26.5 cms. Female – 532 grams, 17.1 troy ounces, height 12 cms, spread 27 cms. Both marked on the edge of the wing with English silver import marks for London 1928 (female) and 1931 (male), importer Adolph Barsach Davis. The male also has a Dutch lion silver mark on the tip of his tail (we’ve not been able to find a similar mark on the female).

An attractive crystal decanter and stopper with lock and key. The body is half thumbnail cut, half plain and has star cut base. The neck has a sterling silver collar with a padlock attached. There is a hinged retaining clip which secures the glass stopper in position – the two ends of the clip fit side by side around the little bracket on the decanter neck so that the padlock can slot through the 3 holes (see photo). Just turn the key to lock or unlock the padlock. Height 24.5 cms. Base 9 x 9 cms square. London 1931. Maker Walter Groves.

This is the largest kettle we’ve ever seen - a giant size antique hot water kettle on stand with a pull off lid and folding raffia handle. The all over decoration is quite spectacular with hand engraved and embossed shells, flowers, foliage and scrolls. There are ornamental cast shell mounts to the base of the handle and cast scroll feet to the base. There are a couple of unusual features - the fish scale ornament to the bottom section of the kettle and also the stylistic flower finial on the lid. The kettle is attached by a chain and key to the circular stand so that it can be tipped to one side in order to pour out the hot water. Height 43 cms (total height with handle upright), 38 cms (with handle folded). Old Sheffield Plate. Circa 1830.
