This is one of the earliest forms of milk jug and the style is very much like a contemporary coffee pot. Simple plain design and very pretty wooden handle. This is a very early date for a silver sauceboat, the first were introduced into England in circa 1715 and had a double lip, the single lipped boats started to appear circa 1730. An unusual feature is the model lion head at the top of the handle. Each jug has a hand engraved crest of a ship to one side, a lion crest to the other side. Good colour. Each contains 450 ml. The sauceboat is large and heavy. Weight 840 grams, 27 troy ounces approx. Base – length 24 cms, width 17 cms. Top of sauceboat – length 19.5, width 11 cms, spread across handles 16 cms. Height 10 cms. 950 grade silver; this is a purer grade of silver than sterling which is 925 parts out of one thousand. French silver marks. Makers mark for Edmond Tetard (1880-1903).
