5722. Pair of George II Paktong Candlesticks

A rare pair of antique cast paktong candlesticks in the typical George II style with shaped base and knopped stem. Made in 2 pieces the stem screws onto the base. Heavy weight 1137 grams, 36.5 troy ounces. Height 20.5 cms. Base 10.5 x 10.5  cms. English circa 1740.

Paktong is a rare Chinese alloy imported in small quantities during the eighteenth century and used to make, primarily, candlesticks but also fire grates and a few other domestic wares. It is a very hard metal and slow to tarnish.
