This lovely castor is of heavy quality and feels good in the hand. The base is plain styled with pierced motifs, the top is simply pierced, the holes are quite large as crushed loaf sugar was still in use at this early date. An extremely rare early English chalice with its matching paten dating to the reign of Elizabeth I. It is quite remarkable to find a piece of silver of such an early date and especially in such excellent condition. This cup follows the standard design for Elizabethan communion cups and is most likely to have been made from pre-reformation silver. The hatched decorative band below the top edge of the cup is typical for the period. Simple foot wires around the base and scratched owners initials. The paten has a similar band of hatched ornament and has the date 1574 which is consistent with the date of manufacture. Total weight 188 grams, 6 troy ounces. Height 15 cms (cup), 18 cms (with top). Diameter of top 9.4 cms. Extremely good silver marks for London 1573. Makers mark “IP” (Jacksons page 95) a known maker of communion cups between 1565-79. *It’s very rare for marks of this period to have a name associated with it. Normally all that remains on the record is the initials.

The matching lid has a capstan shaped finial so that the lid can be turned upside down and used on its own as a saucer. This is the form of the early Restoration porringer, with a bellied shape and the lid sitting over the upper rim. There is a small silver support either side next to the handle for the lid to sit on. To the front there is a large hand engraved armorial and griffin crest within a cartouche of plumage feathers. The lid finial is similarly decorated. Weight 375 grams, 12 troy ounces. Height 14 cms (total), 10 cms (cup), 4.5 cms (lid). Diameter 10 cms. Spread across the handles 17 cms. London 1675. A late 17th century antique sterling silver muffineer in the traditional lighthouse design with a bayonet fitting, so typical of these very early casters. This lovely castor is of heavy quality and feels good in the hand. The base is plain styled with fluted borders, the top is simply pierced, the holes are quite large as crushed loaf sugar was still in use at this early date. Unengraved. Weight 310 grams, 9.9 troy ounces. Height 20 cms. Diameter of base 8.5 cms. London 1690. Makers mark for Thomas Brydon (overstruck) - see Jacksons page 148, bottom mark.

A rare antique sterling silver teapot of small size. Very charming with plain body and engraved decoration to the top. The spout is prettily shaped with acanthus leaf decoration to the tip. Excellent colour. Weight 397 grams, 12.7 troy ounces. Height 12 cms. Spread 20 cms. London 1729. Maker Samuel Margas. The bullet shaped teapot is probably one of the best known types of the George II period and the lid of this one has a cleverly concealed flush hinge which is difficult to distinguish as the engraver has continued the decoration over this area.
