5737. Large Queen Anne Silver Bowl by Gabriel Sleath

A rare and important early English silver bowl from the Queen Anne period. Large size with charmingly quaint lions mask side handles and the ribbed body decoration typical for this period. There are two stunning armorials, crisp and clear, engraved within scroll shaped cartouches. Weight 1054 grams, 33.9 troy ounces. Height 25 cms. Diameter 25 cms. London 1713. Maker Gabriel Sleath.

A large and imposing antique sterling silver rose bowl on pedestal foot with shaped flared top and deep chased all over decoration of swirls and leaves. Traces of original gilding to the inside. 5630. Large Antique Japanese Silver Dragon Bowl

Very large and impressive. A magnificent decorative lot. An antique Japanese silver bowl with 10 sides and having a large undulating dragon mounted on the outside with fantastic quality detail and hammered finish. Double skinned. Weight 2514 grams, 80.8 troy ounces. Height 14 cms. Diameter 30 cms. Stamped underneath with the Japanese character mark “jungin” meaning “pure silver”. Used primarily during the Meiji period (1868-1912) and for a short period after. Circa 1900.

The monteith bowl derives its name after a gentlemen of fashion named Monteith who was remarkable for wearing a scalloped coat. The traditional shape of the monteith allows wine cups to be suspended by the foot so that they are cooled by immersion in iced water.
