An early antique German silver dish (or possibly wine taster) of plain oval form with a scalloped border. To the centre there is a charming bird scene surrounded by raised dot decoration. The cast side handles are very pretty. Original interior gilding and a gilt around the top on the outside. Weight 129 grams, 4.1 troy ounces. Height 3 cms (4.5 cms to top of handle). Top of dish measures 16 x 14 cms. Marked on either side of one of the handles with German silver marks for Augsburg and on the inside rim with the makers mark for Hans Jakob Baur. Circa 1650.

A rare provincial Irish silver dish and detachable cover of unusual shallow design. At first sight this looks to be a bacon or hash dish however it is more likely to be a cheese toaster. Very simple and charming. The plain form is embellished by a gadroon border and small side handles. To the top there is a hand engraved crest of a boars head over a French motto. 524 grams, 16.8 troy ounces. Spread 29 cms. Length 22.5 cms. Width 14.5 cms. Both pieces are stamped “sterling” with the distinctive scrolled border used by George Hodder 1745-1770. The top also bears Hodder’s maker’s mark (double struck).

The basket has a pierced body with a vine decorated cast silver border and it stands on four cast lions paw feet. At this time baskets were used mainly for bread and fruit. The swing handle features a finely modelled animals head to both sides just above the hinges. The centre has a large hand engraved cartouche enclosing an armorial and above is the motto “Luceat et Crescat”. Weight 1600 grams, 51.4 troy oz. The covers are mounted front and back with royal armorial plaques having the motto “Honi Soit Qui Mal YPense” and the crest of a centaur holding a bow and arrow. This is a stunning lot. A fine graduated set of William IV sterling silver meat dishes. Oval form with gadrooned borders. Previously owned by the Maitland* family, all pieces bearing the Maitland arms. Each dish has a hand engraved coat of arms on opposite edges. The dishes are mounted with a graduated set of matching Old Sheffield plated meat dish covers of plain oval outline with fluted borders and detachable handle. Each dome is hand engraved with a crest on one side and a coat of arms on the other. The complete set is contained in a fitted, iron-bound oak trunk. Excellent weight and gauge of silver. Weight of the four silver meat dishes 9858 grams, 317 troy ounces approx. The platters measure large - 61 x 44 cm, medium - 50 x 39 cm and 2 small platters 42 x 32.5 cm.
