A rare early antique silver wine taster of simple plain form in the shape of a flat bowl with a raised central dome. Very charming with the original hand beaten silver. At a later date the reverse side has been gilded for use as a trencher salt and the crest of an otter hand engraved to the front. Weight 86 grams, 2.7 troy ounces. Height 2.1 cm. Diameter 11.7 cm. Stamped on the side for London 1697. Maker possibly William Denny and John Backe – see Jacksons page 150.

A large antique Tibetan or Nepalese silver teapot with a domed lid, originally attached with a chain, and matching teapot stand. Very heavy gauge silver. Interesting style combining both Indian and Chinese influences. The handle is modelled as a dragon’s head with a curved neck and scales, the spout has animal decoration, the body has traces of an engraved or embossed decoration. The teapot has an unusual base formation (see photos) which sits onto an elaborate matching stand. The lid and teapot stand both have a decorative circular motif. Contains 1400 ml. A fine pair of antique sterling silver serving dishes with matching cushion shape covers and magnificent detachable lion mounted ring handles. Elegant plain styling with a broad band of ribbing and gadroon borders. Excellent quality and good gauge silver as you’d expect from this world famous English silversmith. The covers are mounted front and back with royal armorial plaques having the motto “Honi Soit Qui Mal YPense” and the crest of a centaur holding a bow and arrow. These are the arms of the Fitzmaurice family (the Marquesses of Lansdowne). The same armorial is hand engraved to the front and back of the bases. Silver weight 4021 grams, 129 troy ounces. An exceptional pair of antique German silver table ornaments in the form of large model knights in armour, each astride a galloping horse. These are particularly nice examples in terms of size and also the quality of workmanship. The knights have bakelite faces and helmets with hinged visors which can be opened and closed; in the right hand they each hold a jousting pole, or lance, and in the left they clasp the horse’s reins. The models are very intricate with many separate pieces assembled together such as the sword, jousting pole, sword, stirrups and horse bridal. The bases have a naturalist finish representing a grassy field with frogs and lizards and around the bottom edge there is a pierced silver panel with trailing foliage. Although similar in size and stance, these models are significantly different in the decoration of the war horse armour and head embellishments. Weight 1490 and 1507 grams, total weight 2997 grams, 96.3 troy ounces. Height 30 cms. Spread 37.5 cms including the lance. Base 20.5 x 10 cms. Marked on top of the base with German silver marks crown and moon, and Germany. Makers mark “n” for Neresheimer. Circa 1900.
