8832. George III Silver Lidded Tankard - Sold

A good antique sterling silver tankard with domed hinged lid. Plain straight sided design with coopered banding and flared base. Large size. It still has the original hammered finish. Acanthus decorated thumbpiece. There is a large contemporary monogram to the front in old fashioned cursive script. Contains 1150 ml. Weight 1043 grams, 18.3 troy ounces. Height 20.5 cms. Spread 18 cms. Diameter of top 12.1 cms, base 13.5 cms. London 1761. Maker Samuel Whitford I.

Biography - Samuel Whitford I, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. Only mark entered as smallworker 1764.

Condition - This tankard is in very good condition. Crisp engraved monogram to the front. Good clear marks inside lid and on the body next to the handle, handle with makers mark. Initials hand scratched to the underside.
