9003. Antique Silver Salver with Cast Border - Sold


A magnificent quality Victorian sterling silver salver with a decorative cast border. Large size. Good weight. The centre has a finely engraved decorative border with eagles, flowers, scrolls and swags. The cast border has a classical pierced decoration of urns and face masks flanked by panthers; the rope border has vine leaf ornament. Weight 2316 grams, 74.4 troy ounces. Diameter 45.4 cms. Height 3.8 cms. London 1878. Maker Stephen Smith.

Biography - Stephen Smith, London silversmith, working circa 1850-1880. Specialist in important decorative works in the neoclassical style after Cellini and Teniers.

Condition - This excellent salver is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The engraving is sharp, the cast border has good definition. The silver marks are clear; the cast border is stamped with a full set of clear English silver hallmarks, the centre has the maker and lion stamps.
