8865. Antique Irish Silver Tumbler Cup - Sold


A good quality sterling silver cup of simple plain design. Uninscribed. The round and weighted base allows the cup to stay upright when knocked from side to side. Good gauge silver retaining a slightly hammered finish. Contains 170 ml. Weight 126 grams, 4 troy ounces. Height 6.2 cms. Diameter 7.2 cms. Dublin 1750. Maker Alexander Richards.

Condition - This silver cup is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Bright colour. Stamped with a full set of Irish silver hallmarks.

Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Literature - Tumbler cups were made from the mid 17th century. They are made from thick gauge sheet silver which was hammered up so that the sides become thinner towards the top and the rounded base would have the greater weight. When they are knocked over they will automatically right themselves.
